Some hotels are quite near an airport. Many offer convenient shuttle buses, while others are easily accessible via public transport or short taxi journeys. Then there’s the Fairmont Vancouver Airport, which is not just near the airport; it’s literally at the airport. Located right above the US departures section, the Fairmont’s lobby is no more than two minutes from the baggage carousels.
The Fairmont Vancouver airport is not, however, merely conveniently located. It is a fully soundproofed luxury hotel, complete with an award winning, state of the art health club and spa, a first class restaurant and unbeatable meeting and business facilities.
The Fairmont was opened in October, 1999, and offers 392 spacious rooms, all of which offer beautiful runway, mountain or ocean views through floor to ceiling windows, but without the noise often associated with airport hotels. In addition, the Fairmont is possibly the most hi-tech hotel anywhere, and that’s not an idle boast. It is the first hotel in the world to offer satellite check-in kiosks, and the first hotel in Canada to install a touch screen control system called InnComm in each of its rooms. Guests can control everything from lighting to room temperature, to the television, and even electronic “Do Not Disturb” signs at the touch of a panel. Combine all this with the fact that the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel was recently named the “Best Airport Hotel in North America” at the World Airport Awards, and you have a combination that’s hard to beat, whether travelling for business or pleasure.
About the area
Vancouver is a thriving and beautiful city with attractions ranging from major league sports to a pristine environment with mountain and ocean on either side. The Fairmont staff is delighted to guide guests in the right direction, whatever their interest. They can advise on everything from the best places to shop and eat, to how to book a whale watching tour. Just some of the activities that Fairmont staff can organize for their guests include river rafting, skiing, snowmobiling, golf, bicycle tours, air tours, dog sledding, deep sea fishing, canoeing or kayaking, nature tours, and food and wine tasting tours.
In addition, Vancouver and nearby Richmond are home to some perpetually popular tourist attractions. The Britannia Shipyard and the London Heritage Farms offer living, true-life glimpses into days gone by. The speed skating oval used for the 2010 Olympic Games is now a major sports attraction, open to the public and only a few minutes from the Fairmont Hotel. Whatever takes your fancy, the staff of the Fairmont will be able to tell you what’s on offer locally, and the best ways to get there.
Rooms at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport are, without exception, spacious by any standards. They start at no less than 411 square feet, and all come with an exceptional array of amenities as standard.
These amenities include:
- Personal climate control system
- Electronic in-room safe
- Complimentary tea and coffee making facilities
- Cable TV
- Wireless high-speed internet access (small charge applies except for President’s Club members)
- Bathrobes and slippers
- Separate shower, bath, and toilet
- Bathroom amenities featuring Millar and Harris products
- Large work desk with computer data port
- Two phones (one portable) with voice mail service
Guests on long layovers at Vancouver Airport will appreciate Fairmont’s day use guest rooms, which allow weary travellers to freshen up and relax in peace and comfort while waiting for their connecting flight.
Room choices include the Fairmont Room, with one king or two queen size beds, as well as runway, mountain or partial ocean views.
Deluxe Rooms are located on the 11th, 12th, and 13th floors and offer very nice extra features which include Sterns and Foster pillow top beds, 32-inch flat screen TV, and a Bose stereo system. The Fairmont has even supplied free standing Nikon spotting scopes in these rooms, for even better views of the airport runway, the North Shore, and the mountains beyond.
Signature Rooms are for those requiring a bit more space. At 513 square feet, these rooms are appointed with a large king size bed and extra large bathrooms with double sink vanity and luxurious air soaker bathtubs.
Like any great hotel, the Fairmont also offers a range of suites, including the 745 square foot Sea Island Suite with separate living room, bedroom and bathroom, and the amazing 1,250 square foot Jade Suite, the ultimate in luxury. The Jade Suite is located on the top floor, comes with private concierge service, large living room, kitchenette, and an amazing bathroom with a vanity that is made entirely of hand carved jade.
Another way in which the Fairmont goes the extra mile for its guests is their consideration for those suffering from sensitive allergies. The Fairmont has a number of hypo-allergenic guest rooms that have been designed and maintained to ensure a comfortable stay for those with environmental sensibilities. For example, all linens are washed to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and changed every day. This temperature ensures no chlorine bleach is required. Special air filters are also installed in these rooms, to leave the air sparkling clean and allergen free.
Dining at the Fairmont
Even those not staying at the hotel flock to the award-winning Globe at YVR Restaurant; so much so that anyone thinking of eating there should not fail to make a reservation. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, seven days a week, Globe specializes in Pacific Northwest cuisine and is one of the only hotels to take part in the Ocean Wise program. The breakfast buffet is incredibly popular, but they also offer an extensive ala carte menu, as well as exceptional—and in many cases locally sourced—wines with lunch and dinner. Lunch features such favourites as the Prime Rib Burger and Signature Salads, while the dinner menu highlights the vast array of fresh, local produce and seafood.
The Fairmont also boasts the Jetside Bar, which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy tasty cocktails or savoury snacks, while relaxing in overstuffed sofas near the huge open fireplace, while watching major sporting events on one of the five giant screen TV’s located around the lounge. The Jetside Bar is open from 11 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

Other things to do
If walking, jogging, and enjoying the views aren’t for you, take a dip in the outdoor pool that overlooks the marina and the hotel’s beautiful gardens, or work up a sweat in the state of the art fitness centre located on the hotel’s top floor. It’s free to all guests and open 24 hours a day. Slightly further afield, take some time to check out the village of Steveston, a town within a town (in this case Richmond). Besides the lovely boutiques and seafood restaurants, it’s also possible to charter a fishing boat and go deep sea fishing. If boats aren’t your thing, try casting for salmon right off Steveston’s public wharf, or take a tour to where you can see bald eagles nesting in the wild. There are even guided tours of the Richmond speed skating oval, home to the 2010 Winter Olympics, which now offers ice skating to the public. There’s also a complimentary community shuttle service that runs 24 hours per day, from the hotel to the local shopping malls, Steveston Village and the local wineries.

All these delights and more are on offer, and yet the park sits practically in the centre of Vancouver City.

Only minutes from the award winning Vancouver International Airport—recently voted the Best Airport in North America—visitors to the Sandman Hotel can make the short journey via the hotel’s complimentary shuttle bus service. The hotel is less than half an hour via road or light rail from the heart of downtown Vancouver, and within minutes of Richmond’s famour shopping districts and tourist attractions. Vancouver is also a gateway to the great North West region, with rail links to the resort towns of Whistler, Banff and Jasper. The Sandman Signature Hotel and Resort Vancouver Airport is part of the Sandman Signature Resort chain. Each Sandman hotel strives to provide its guests with the ultimate in creature comforts from the moment they enter the gleaming, modern, stylish lobby, till the moment they check out. The 210-room Sandman Vancouver Airport fits easily into this philosophy. With guest rooms the size of what some hotels would call suites, and suites the size of what some people would call a nice apartment, it’s safe to say that guests of the Sandman won’t be feeling cramped or confined in their rooms. Take, as one example, the “standard” Signature Premiere Room. “Standard” seems downright inappropriate, because this room comes with two Queen beds and a minimum of 335 square feet of smoke-free living space. Signature Rooms also offer a seating area with an arm chair, ottoman and large colour television, while outside there’s a private balcony with table and chairs, where guests can enjoy panoramic views and breathtaking sunsets. Standard? We don’t think so!
Each of the Sandman Resort Hotel’s guest rooms is styled and furnished to the highest level of sophistication, elegance and comfort. As well as pillow-top mattresses and premium bedding, all rooms also offer the following features and amenities:
- Individual air conditioning and heating controls
- Complimentary tea and coffee making facilities
- Three-piece bathroom suites, with separate bath and shower
- Complimentary designer toiletries pack
- Floor to ceiling windows—all the better for enjoying those views
- Marble counter tops
- Complimentary high speed wireless internet access
- Large work desk with data port, comfortable ergonomic chair and desk lamp
- Electronic in-room safe
- Telephone with voice mail service
- Hair dryer, iron and ironing board
- YVR check-in kiosk
- Complimentary access to the Sandman fitness centre, indoor heated pool and whirlpool
- Complimentary shuttle to River Rock Casino
In addition to all the above, King Suites offer an amazing 650 square feet of living space, a 32-inch colour TV, a King bed, plus sofa bed and single bed, as well as a kithcenette with small fridge, microwave, and dishwasher.
For very special occasions, or if you just really want to spoil yourself, consider one of the Sandman Resort’s Penthouse Suites. Starting at 670 square feet, the facilities on offer are positively regal. They include a five-piece bathroom suite with Jacuzzi Soaker tub, no less than two balconies with the best views the hotel has to offer, separate living, sleeping and dining areas. The living room contains a plush sofa, chaise lounge and ottoman, while the full kitchen is fitted with large fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher and stove-top oven.
The Sandman Resort Hotel Vancouver Airport has a range of facilities befitting a country club. All visitors have access to the indoor heated swimming pool and whirlpool, and the kids will go crazy for the 225-foot long water slide. Outdoors, there are no less than two pools (seasonal use). Besides the hotel’s fitness facility, guests can also visit the Steve Nash Sports Club (fee applies), or the seriously active can take to the indoor tennis courts (fee applies). Combined with the dazzling array of shopping centres, malls, sporting venues and tourist attractions nearby, everyone can be as busy as they choose to be.
Did anyone mention food?
After all the activity, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite. Once again, the Sandman Resort Hotel has ensured that its guests are spoiled for choice. Family favourites are available literally 24 hours per day. That old reliable, Denny’s Restaurant, is on site and open round the clock. From a stack of buttermilk pancakes with warm maple syrup for breakfast, to burgers, steaks and seafood for dinner, all tastes and appetites are catered for at Denny’s. But the offerings don’t stop there. At the Sandman, guests can also choose meals, snacks, coffee, drinks and other forms of refreshment from such exceptional eateries as Chop Steakhouse and Bar, the Shark Club Sports Bar and Grill or the Java Fresh Coffee Kiosk. And of course, because that’s just the way they are, the Sandman also invites guests to just relax in their rooms, if they so choose, and take advantage of the extensive room service menu on offer, available 24 hours per day.
