Fairmont Vancouver Airport

Deluxe Rooms are located on the 11th, 12th, and 13th floors and offer very nice extra features which include Sterns and Foster pillow top beds, 32-inch flat screen TV, and a Bose stereo system. The Fairmont has even supplied free standing Nikon spotting scopes in these rooms, for even better views of the airport runway, the North Shore, and the mountains beyond.

Signature Rooms are for those requiring a bit more space. At 513 square feet, these rooms are appointed with a large king size bed and extra large bathrooms with double sink vanity and luxurious air soaker bathtubs.

Like any great hotel, the Fairmont also offers a range of suites, including the 745 square foot Sea Island Suite with separate living room, bedroom and bathroom, and the amazing 1,250 square foot Jade Suite, the ultimate in luxury. The Jade Suite is located on the top floor, comes with private concierge service, large living room, kitchenette, and an amazing bathroom with a vanity that is made entirely of hand carved jade.

Another way in which the Fairmont goes the extra mile for its guests is their consideration for those suffering from sensitive allergies. The Fairmont has a number of hypo-allergenic guest rooms that have been designed and maintained to ensure a comfortable stay for those with environmental sensibilities. For example, all linens are washed to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and changed every day. This temperature ensures no chlorine bleach is required. Special air filters are also installed in these rooms, to leave the air sparkling clean and allergen free.

Even those not staying at the hotel flock to the award-winning Globe at YVR Restaurant; so much so that anyone thinking of eating there should not fail to make a reservation. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, seven days a week, Globe specializes in Pacific Northwest cuisine and is one of the only hotels to take part in the Ocean Wise program. The breakfast buffet is incredibly popular, but they also offer an extensive ala carte menu, as well as exceptional—and in many cases locally sourced—wines with lunch and dinner. Lunch features such favourites as the Prime Rib Burger and Signature Salads, while the dinner menu highlights the vast array of fresh, local produce and seafood.

The Fairmont also boasts the Jetside Bar, which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy tasty cocktails or savoury snacks, while relaxing in overstuffed sofas near the huge open fireplace, while watching major sporting events on one of the five giant screen TV’s located around the lounge. The Jetside Bar is open from 11 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

River Rock Casino

Picture, if you will, a splashing torrent of water, pouring down the face of a waterfall, before settling into a crystal clear pond.  Are you thinking a remote Caribbean island jungle paradise?  Think again, because we’ve just described the lobby of the River Rock Casino Resort, located just seven minutes from Vancouver International Airport, and right on the waterfront in Richmond.  The new Canada Line light rail service means the hotel is a single stop from the airport, making it eminently accessible. For special occasions, have a look at one of the ten Penthouse Suites at River Rock.  With both one and two-bedroom configurations, these suites offer from 1,000 to 1,200 square feet of living space, a dining room that seats six comfortably, and a bar in every suite.  The one-bed suites are fitted with one and a half bathrooms, with two and a half in the two-bedroom suites.

If only the best will do, go for the 2,800 square foot Presidential Suite.  The amazing range of features includes a monitor at the front door to screen guests, a full size pool table in the great room, two full size bedrooms, a wrap-around outdoor deck with mountain, marina, city and airport runway views, and no less than 1,000 square feet of living space in the living/dining room alone.  Each of the two bedrooms has its own en suite bathroom, and each bathroom is equipped with a large screen TV.

Ok, what would you like?  Italian or Japanese?  Big American-style burgers, or sizzling steaks?  It doesn’t really matter, because at River Rock, you’ll find exactly what you crave.  The hotel actually has its own International Food Court, with Asian, Italian, West Coast fare, freshly baked goods, gourmet coffee…you name it and you’ll find it here.  Conveniently located in the main casino, the Food Court has one other feature that’s pretty sure to please.  It’s open 24 hours a day, seven days per week!

For truly upscale dining in an elegant surrounding, go up to the third floor and visit Tramonto’s.  Enjoy the incredible sunsets and amazing views through floor to ceiling windows while sipping one of their exceptional wines.  Then tuck into Executive Chef Sylvain Cuerrier’s Italian speciality dishes, or enjoy locally sourced, first day fresh produce.  Tramonto’s is open for dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday, and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

Finally, those with exceptionally healthy appetites may prefer to visit River Rock’s all you can eat restaurant, known simply as The Buffet.  Open for breakfast lunch and dinner, with a menu that changes daily, special prices for children, and complimentary soft drinks, tea and coffee included in every meal, The Buffet is one of those rare places that simply can’t fail to please the entire family.

After dinner, you just can’t miss one of the nightly shows held in Lulu’s Lounge, or the spectacular 950-seat, 21,000 square foot River Rock Show Theatre.  Boasting a state of the art seating system that makes every seat “the best seat in the house,” guests can enjoy music, comedy and theatre every night of the week.  River Rock Show Theatre has been the venue for no lesser celebrities than Russell Brand, Carmen Electra, Gene Simmons and even the Chippendales.

Pacific Gateway Hotel At Vancouver Airport

The Pacific Gateway Hotel at Vancouver Airport, formerly the Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel, is one of those places where you can get away from it all, or you can be near all the action, or both at the same time.  It has the Vancouver International Airport as a next door neighbour, and is a mere 20 minutes from the heart of downtown Vancouver.  At the same time, it’s located right on the waterfront of the mighty Fraser River, boasts a marina with all of over 100 slips, and has more than 12 miles of riverside trails connected to the hotel property.  Guests who decide to go walking or jogging along the riverside should let the concierge know before they go; he’ll send along a complimentary bottle of chilled water to take along.

Other things to do

 If walking, jogging, and enjoying the views aren’t for you, take a dip in the outdoor pool that overlooks the marina and the hotel’s beautiful gardens, or work up a sweat in the state of the art fitness centre located on the hotel’s top floor.  It’s free to all guests and open 24 hours a day.  Slightly further afield, take some time to check out the village of Steveston, a town within a town (in this case Richmond).  Besides the lovely boutiques and seafood restaurants, it’s also possible to charter a fishing boat and go deep sea fishing.  If boats aren’t your thing, try casting for salmon right off  Steveston’s public wharf, or take a tour to where you can see bald eagles nesting in the wild.  There are even guided tours of the Richmond speed skating oval, home to the 2010 Winter Olympics, which now offers ice skating to the public.  There’s also a complimentary community shuttle service that runs 24 hours per day, from the hotel to the local shopping malls, Steveston Village and the local wineries.

The Accommodations

Whether a business traveller or family on vacation, the Pacific Gateway has a room to suit your requirements.  The hotel is also delighted to announce the opening of the Signature Club Floor, and Signature Club Rooms, on the 9th floor.  These rooms offer an upgraded level of amenities and services, including complimentary continental breakfast and 24-hour access to the Signature Club Lounge.  All Signature Club Rooms come with either one king or two double beds, depending on requirements.

The Pacific Gateway is most definitely not just a business class hotel.  They place a strong emphasis on making young one2es feel welcome and important.  For example, children checking in are given their own check-in forms to fill out.  Any child under the age of 17 stays free if they’re sharing their parents’ room, and children under six eat for free.  Those between the ages of seven to 12 can get half price portions off the main menu, or they can choose from a wide selection of popular foods off the children’s menu.

The Restaurants

Breakfast is served in the Hemisphere North Restaurant located on the lobby level.  Open from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. from June to September, and from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. the rest of the year, the Hemisphere North serves all the traditional favourites, fabulous coffee and freshly baked goods, to get every day off to a great start.

Lunch and dinner are available in the amazing Pier 73 Restaurant.  Besides incredibly good food made from the freshest and finest locally sourced ingredients, this incredible restaurant is actually suspended above the Fraser River.  It offers amazing views of the North Shore Mountains through giant windows, and is a favourite location for guests to sit and watch the sun go down in the western sky.  Pier 73 is open from 11 a.m. to midnight, Sunday to Thursday, and to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Last, but by no means least, the Pacific Gateway Hotel is also home to the Fuel Barista Bar, a traditional café that serves gourmet coffees, speciality teas and freshly baked confectionary, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.  Guests can also enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi internet access at the same time as they enjoy their breakfast or snack.

Speaking of “the latest offers,” the Four Points has one that is utterly unique and has proven a favourite with many guests.  The “Happy Birthday” offer applies to Friday-Saturday arrivals (some blackout dates apply, so please check in advance) for guests staying two to three nights.  The offer states that the normal rate applies for the first night of the stay.  For the second night—and third if applicable—the rate will be based on the guest’s birth year.  So, for example, if you were born in 1945, your rate will be just $45 per night after the first night.  Anyone born around 1920 should not miss this opportunity!

The Four Points by Sheraton are delighted to present the Worldwide Café, open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  As the name implies, the restaurant’s menu features favourite dishes from around the globe.  If pushed to name their speciality, however, they’re most likely to recommend their incredible slow-roasted prime rib, made from Canadian Angus beef and cooked just the way you like it.  Worldwide Café is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and from 5 p.m. to around 10 p.m., every day.

If it’s just a drink and a snack you crave before hitting the town, stop by the Kimberly Lounge on the lobby level.  There’s live entertainment every Friday and Saturday night, and besides a great assortment of cocktails, wine and beer, the Kimberly Lounge also serves a delicious afternoon tea every day.  The lounge is open from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The Queen Elizabeth Park is an absolute treasure trove of horticultural delights, but it offers so much more than the stunning floral displays, ornamental trees and shrubs, and pristine public gardens.  Also located within its sprawling grounds are sporting facilities including a golf course, tennis courts and lawn bowling.  The park’s Quarry Garden is an ever-changing wonderland of colour, and there’s an indoor floral conservatory as well.  All these delights and more are on offer, and yet the park sits practically in the centre of Vancouver City.

Visiting in the summer?  Don’t miss the Granville Island Farmers Market at Triangle Square, which runs every Thursday from early June to mid-October.  Field fresh, local produce, from apples to cherries to potatoes to just about any fruit and veg you can think of are on sale from the men and women who grow them from seed to table.  Delicious cheeses and freshly baked goods are on offer; it’s worth the visit just to experience the beautiful aromas that fill the market!
